Winter steelhead using nymphs.

Posted on March 3rd, 2016

While most steelheaders, including myself try and use the freshest roe bags for winter steelhead fishing, fishing nymphs with weighted heads either with a fly rod or a drift outfit can be very effective, especially when they stop taking roe bags.

When I drift nymphs I make sure to use a longer flourocarbon leader of at least 24″ (from my swivel to my fly), to enable the nymph to drift ahead of my line. I find this makes for a very natural presenation and works especially well when the water levels drop and water is clear.
