It’s been an interesting winter so far with ice anglers travelling a little north to find safe ice and open water anglers still fishing for Lake Trout, Steelhead and Browns in Lake Ontario and the Niagara River and even smaller tributary anglers getting out and catching their share of steelhead.
Joe Kubassek was recently out and landed 4 fresh-run steelhead. Water levels are low and clear but fish are still running and few anglers are out for them. Best presentation is fishing a float and roe bag suspended about 1′ off the bottom. With low water conditions will be holding in the deeper runs/pools and under any cover as logs in the water, undercut banks and log-jams. This is the time to take advantage of excellent “chromers” moving in many of the Lake Ontario tributaries while temperatures are relatively mild during the day.
