Winter brown trout while steelheading.

Posted on March 20th, 2015

While most steelheaders are targeting fresh-run steelhead in many of the Great Lakes tributaries, some are getting surprised and hooking brown trout. manhy migratory brown trout that spawned in the fall wintered in the tributaries and are waiting for the major thaw and high water before heading back to the Great Lakes.

While steelhead like to hold in faster water rapids and pools, these “drop-back” browns prefer to hold in the slower deeper pools and especially at the ‘tail-out” of the pool.
