Walleye in the Welland River, Welland, ON.
Posted on July 5th, 2011[nggallery id=554]After fishing Lake Erie, NY for trophy Sheepshead, Tony Brecknock and I decided to scout the Welland River, ON to try and locate some panfish, pike and walleye for me to do a Ocean Kayak TV show today. We got on the river around 3pm, cruised slowly keeping a close eye on our 1100 Series Humminbird sonar for structure areas where the water went from 5-12′ quickly. In no-time we were cranking structure areas using Rapala Shift Rods & Reels, Sufix 832, 10 lb. test line and Rapala Dives-To 7 Flat series crankbaits, and of course, our Lucky Strike Live Release Basket Net. We immediately started hooking rock bass on our first spot and moved further down the river. By 4:30, we found walleye holding on the back-side of a nice 4-8′ drop-off. Tony had two walleye on quickly and I continued to catch panfish. Both his fish were caught fishing right on the bottom using a TriggerX 4″ tube.
Hopefully we’ll have some more pictures from today’s shoot. It’s 7am….got to get to work!
