Upper NY tributaries update.
Posted on March 17th, 2015Ron Bierstine reports. Flows were bumped up again yesterday in the Oak Orchard, now at high levels consisting so far of just turbine water at what looks like nearly full capacity. There may be one more notch higher at the Waterport hydro. Water color is not very dirty given the higher flows, about 2 feet of just stained viz. A warm day is forecast today and cooler again tomorrow. Todays weather and chance of precip tonight could bump flows up more and dirtier with possible overflow water. The previous weekend reports were good action Sat and little slower, Sun. Most action seems high or low in the rivercourse. With higher flows now fish could be spreading out and it’s not always easy to get good drifts in higher flows for some anglers. All the wading areas are open and free of ice. The other area smaller tribs are high and stained, still for the most part running under ice except in their upper most fast water areas. Smallest tribs may have some fast water open areas. Rivermouth areas in the Ooak Orchard and all the other tribs could become mostly ice free thru this week sometime. Overall the theme remains a slow burn on the melt-off and any corresponding rise in flows.
