Upper NY, Lake Ontario tributary steelhead & brown trout fishing update.

Posted on December 8th, 2013

Late fall steelhead take artificials and egg-sacks well and fight hard, even in cold water temperatures.

Ron Bierstine reports. No significant winter weather impacts here on the Western NY Niagara Frontier. The winter weather advisory is for south of the area. Temps are seasonable cold with highs around 30 F. Still a nice window of fishability for this late fall time frame with a mix of browns and steelhead being caught. There are some fresh, spawning and post spawn browns all in the mix. Flows were back up some in the smaller tribs, but should be back on the drop now with the chance for some icing with any cold weather hanging in. Flows in the Oak Orchard are lower then previous de-watering of the Erie Canal but still at a nice fishable level with just a slight stain to the water. Flows will likely be on the drop and going toward clear. Anglers putting in something like a day or half day effort will find the bite turning on and off some for the chance at a few hook-ups.
