Upper Niagara River, ON smallmouth & largemouth bass on spinnerbaits.

Posted on August 21st, 2013

I just had the pleasure of fishing with our good friends Gerald Fisher, Willy, & Les, on the Upper Niagara River, ON.  We left the Fort Erie, ON boat launch around 8:30am and headed down the NY-side of Grand Island to fish some of the shoreline/current breaks casting an assortent of 3/8 oz. spinnerbaits.

The 18? Riverhawk boat equipped with the MinnKota Terrova IPilot electric used in conjunction with the Humminbird 800 series sonar kept us on top of the structure/current breaks.  We use Rapala Shift & Concept Ti rods matched with Rapala reels .  Our line of choice was the Sufix 832 braid in 20 lb. test with a 40lb. test Sufix fluorocarbon leader (there are lot’s of musky in the Upper Niagara).

We fished until 12:30pm and landed about a dozen smallmouth & largemouth bass with the largest fish being in the 3 lb. range.  Gerald had the largest bass on, a nice smallmouth bass that looked like it was 4-5 lb., but it through the spinnerbait before he could land it.
