This fall air and water temps are still pretty warm, but it looks like Great Lakes smallmouth are already starting their migration towards deeper water.
Pat Pagano who runs the ICHA Handicapable Fishing Derby in Windsor, ON caught and released this chunky 5 lb. smallmouth fishing a 5/8 oz. jighead with a Lunker City Fin-S-Fish jigging on the bottom in about 40′ of water.
While tubes work well all summer long, in the fall plastic minnow grubs with or without “paddle-tails” work extremely well when smallies target larger size forage fish to put on some weight before water temps really cool down and they become lathargic.
