Alan Dean was chasing a school of White crappie that are only available certain Southern Ontario waters in Canada. You can catch both black and white crappie in Southern Ontario but the White crappie grow extremely large. Alan was catching lots of white crappie for days and many were in the 14 to 15 inch range when he hooked into this giant slab. At first he thought it was a small carp or a large white bass but to his surprise it was the biggest crappie. He was using 4 pound mono a mini-float in 8 feet of water fishing 3 feet under his float. He used a 1/32 oz jig and a 1.5 inch black tube jig. Any combination of black catches the big slabs down in Southern Ontario. He caught around 60-70 crappie in 2 days all in the trophy size range. Most went back to catch another day but this Giant Slab found a place on my wall.
It measured 17 inches long, it had a 13 inch girth and weighed 2.72 pounds, an Ontario Record!!
