Trophy Channel Catfish in Grand River, Lake Erie, ON
Posted on May 7th, 2009Jason and Tyler Howick report: We recently made a trip to the Grand River in Dunville, ON for the first time to fish for pre-spawn Channel Catfish. Fishing from a boat we surveyed a lot of river using our sonar to locate deep holes, channel edges and concentrations of cats. We fished slip sinker rigs using 2-3 oz weights and 3/0 – 4/0 hooks baited with chunks of cut shiner and sucker. Most of our hits came from the edge of sharp breaking flats leading into the deeper channel. We managed to catch eight channel cats ranging in size from 2 – 12 lbs and from the reports that we heard, the best fishing for big trophy cats seems to be early shortly after ice out when water temps reach the 45 F range.
