Trolling with Luhr Jensen Dipsey Divers & Trolling Sufix Leadcore line for walleye and steelhead, Lake Erie, Erieau, ON.Posted on September 4th, 2014
I had the pleasure yesterday to do a TV show deep-water trolling on Lake Erie out of Erieau, ON with Jeremy Brooks who operates Trophy Takers Fishing Charter . We started fishing around 8:30am and had great surface conditions after 4-days of rough conditions. Our strategy was to fish water ranging in depth from 50-65′ where there were silt-to-rock bottom transitions. Our weapons, Rapala Walleye Team trolling rods as well as Rapala R-Type and Rapala RSC trolling rods specially designed to troll with in-line “diving-devices” such as the Luhr Jensen multi-directional Dipsey Diver, the Luhr Jensen Deep Six, the Luhr Jensen Pink Lady and flat-lining with the Sufix Leadcore line that sinks about 5′ for every 30′ of color you let out. The rods were matched with Rapala Hydros conter trolling reels and loaded with Sufix 832 braid and Sufix Fluorocarbon leaders. The action started quckly hooking chunky white bass on all of the rods. This was fun, but after a while we realized the hoards of white bass where outcompeting the walleye for out lures. We fish the Luhr Jensen Shoehorse and Coyote spoons as well as the Luhr Jensen Hot Lips crankbaits and all were working. We had to cover lot’s of water to find the walleye and we did, as well as some nice steelhead.
If you like catching and eating walleye, Lake Erie has an excellent fishery where you can use your own boat, or if you don’t have all the gear, hire Trophy Takers Fishing Charters and they will make sure you catch fish!
