Steelheaders did not know what they would be in for opening day in southern Ontario due heavy rains literally days before. Fortunately tributaries had good clarity for the opener but the high water levels just before encouraged many spawned-out steelhead to make their way down to Lake Ontario…good for the fishery! I heard from many anglers that either did great, or not so good.
Location, location, location….most anglers that did well were fishing stretches where pods of fish were holding on their way back down with some pairs still spawning. This coming weekend as waters get clearer and clearer look for more drop-backs in the lower sections of tributaries. Clearer water means starting early and downsizing leaders, hooks, terminal tackle, size of floats and even size of roe bags. Make sure to have a selection of steelhead nymphs and beads to be ready to give them what they want.
