Mid-Oct. may be a little late for many Lake Erie anglers to venture out in search of Great Lakes open-water walleye but not for my friend Jeff Wood and I. We just finished shooting a “lumpy” deep-water Walleye TV show for the upcoming new-season of www.canadian-sportfishing.com .
When you’re fishing 60-75′ depths to reach Walleye that are near the bottom in 12-17mph winds and 2-4′ waves, you better be able to get your lures down in front of them. This was no problem using the Scotty Downrigger we have equipped on our G3 Boat in conjunction with the Raymarine Axiom fishfinder.
We controlled the trolling speed at 1-1.5 miles per hour and kept our eye on the fishfinder screen to see how deep the Walleye were swimming at. Using an electric downrigger makes it simple to adjust your depth in seconds. It was rough, but we managed to catch our dinner!
