Summer spinnerbait Bass action.

Posted on August 24th, 2022

Summer is one of the best time to fish over those healthy aquatic weedbeds with a spinnerbait. Bass, Pike and even Walleye love to hit spinnerbaits fished just below the surface through weeds.

Bass
Spinnerbaits work well fished over rocky bottom or over heavy weeds.

Two of the key features that should determine which spinnerbait style you use are; weight of the spinnerbait and types of blades. For example a 3/8 oz. spinnerbait works well fished over short weeds coming off the bottom since they sink faster. Add a willow-leaf blade or two to a 3/8 oz spinner bait and it provides lots of flash while moving fast to help you cover water.

If you’re fishing in heavier weeds and shallower water you will be best off fishing a 1/4 oz spinnerbait equipped with Colorado blades that will keep the spinnerbait from dropping down and picking up weeds.

The last thing to keep in mind is speed of retrieval. Two simple rules; inactive bass, slow-rolling the spinnerbait deeper. Active bass, reel faster and anticipate explosive strikes.
