Steelheading for winter brown trout?

Posted on February 6th, 2016

One of the bonuses of steelheading the Upper NY tributaries throughout the winter is that you can regularly catch migratory brown trout that have finished spawning and winter in the lower-sections of the tributaries, not heading back into Lake Ontario until early spring.

This beautiful brown was caught drifting a 6mm bead in 3-4′ of water using a sensitive 6 gram float and light leader. Many of these Lake Ontario tributaries have opened-up due to mild temperatures.

The water is very cold and clear demanding “finesse” presentations and “stealth” approaching any fish-holding runs!
