Small streamer flies for Great Lakes Steelhead.

Posted on December 29th, 2015

While most steelheaders target Great Lakes winter steelhead and migratory browns using roe bags, single imitation salmon eggs, steelhead beads and small plastic worms, I have gained a lot of confidence fishing small, light-body steelhead flies.

My most productive steelhead flies are tied with a sinking bead which I often paint eyes onto. I fish these suspended in the water column under a float, much like drifting roe-bags, but instead of making a “dead-drift”, I actually shake my float to make my fly swim gently in front of holding steelhead. This presentation often produces steelhead in the middle of the day when they won’t respond to roe-bags!
