Small stream Brown Trout.

Posted on April 30th, 2016

Each spring when we target steelhead in the upper reaches of Great Lakes tributaries invariably hook-up some resident brown trout.

These fish are not big, usually under 2 lb., but they are gorgeous. I know of guys that target these fish because of their gorgeous colors. We usually catch them incidentally drifting roe bags or steelhead beads for steelhead, but if you want to target them, you need to use a shorter “light-action” rod, definitely plan on fishing them after a rain when the water is discolored and also fish a couple of artificial lures. Two of my favorite is the Vibrax #1 spinner and the Rapala Countdown in the #3 & #4 on 4 or 6 lb. test Sufix Seige monofilament line.
