You really have to know the fish you are targeting in southwest Florida if you want to land them successfully. Some fish like redfish and snook have very small teeth and all you need is a 30 lb. fluorocarbon leader.
But, other fish like the mackerel family have many, really sharp teeth that can easily cut fluorocarbon leaders. For those fish you are wise to either use a multi-wire or single strand wire leader that is at least 12″ long. Mackerel can feed in such a frenzy that sometime when you are fighting one, others will swarm around trying to get in on the action and will run into the main line above the leader and cut it!
