On a recent Here’s the Catch! TV shoot in the Gulf of Mexico, FL I had the pleasure of fishing with Brian Drysdale who operates Ritchie’s End of Trail Lodge, ON.
Our plan was to head off-shore and use the Raymarine Axiom to locate baitfish schools near the bottom in 100-120′ of water where we were pretty sure there would be a mix of Snapper species feeding on them.
We fished frozen, whole threadfin shad on double-hook, sliding sinker rigs with 4 oz. egg sinkers near the bottom. Mangrove snapper can be tricky to hook because they can bite very erratically and leave the bait quickly.
Timing is everything when setting the hook. As soon as you hook up with a Mangrove that is over 2 lb. they are scrappy fighters and if not hooked well they often get off.
