Thanks for the excellent info on Costa Rica. One quick follow-up, if I may: Do you need wire leaders for this kind of saltwater shore fishing? Or maybe heavy mono/flouro bite tippet?

You are welcome. 50# fluorocarbon leader is a standard if you have the chance of hooking larger Jacks, Cero & Spanish Mackerel in the shallows. The fluorocarbon is less likely to get bitten-through, and if the fish are large enough to head toward smaller coral-heads, it increases your chance of the last 2′ of line not  breaking. If barracuda are on the prowl, definitely use a wire leader of at least 18″ in length. Also a good idea to double your line for the last 2′ above the fluorocarbon or wire leader.
