Is it all right to use a very heavy sliding sinker for trout? I fish from shore and would like to cast further sometimes. I am thinking the line will slide through the sinker and the fish will not feel the weight no matter how heavy it is. Thank you!

You are absolutely correct! You can use a heavy as weight as you like. If it’s a “sliding-sinker” bottom-rig, when a fish takes the bait the line slides through the weight and it does not feel it. If you have not, try using a floating device like a Lil’Corky drifter, small marshmallow (or section of marshmallow), small pieces of Styrofoam inside a roe-bag, etc. Getting your bait off the bottom can really help increase the number of trout you catch.
