I’m getting my reels ready for spring and changing my lines. Last spring I bought a Abu Garcia silver max bait cast combo. It’s my first bait cast and didn’t have much luck with it, one 4lbs bass under a dock and some how a 18″ muski. I was using Suffix 832 braid and tried to tie on a floro leader with a uni knot but lost my crank bait when the knot slipt. I wanted to know what line you recommend for a bait cast beginner that uses it for top water, jigging and crank baits. I know it’s only suppose to be used for one. I did get really good using the reel but this year I would like to catch some fish on it. Also if you do recommend a main line with a leader can you show what knots to use. Thanx and I love your show your kind and greatfull and it makes it a joy to watchPosted on March 3rd, 2016
Hi Steve, my pleasure to answer your question. Firstly, there is no one-presentation limitation with a baitcaster. You can use it for whatever type of fishing you choose. Secondly, most baitcaters perform best with a line diameter that is 12 lb. mono or larger. So, it you are going to use braid, I would recommend you load on no less than 40 lb. Sufix 832 (10 lb. monofilament diameter).
Regarding your connections, we have produced an excellent educational video on our Italo Labignan YouTube channel where I show/explain the best connection to use for lighter and heavier Fluorocarbon-to-Braid connections. You can click on the link above, or when you get on our channel you can type, “connecting leaders with knots” in our search engine).
