How and when should one \’angle\’ for splake?
Posted on October 2nd, 2012Hi Ron…The best time to fish for splake is either thorugh the ice, or in very early spring when the ice just breaks-up. As the water warms, splake behave like lake trout and can roam in deeper water at all depth in surch of food, which can make locating them difficult. For ice fishing most anglers will either fish a “set-line” and bait (live or dead minnows), or they will “vertical-jig” using a variety of smaller spoons/Rapalas that resemble a 2-3″ baitfish. When they ice breaks up anglers will either troll shorelines, or cast with the same lures as above, or they will “still-fish” with minnows, or spawn sacks…God bless you, Italo
