You can virtually catch large and smallmouth bass fishing any of the “pencil-reed” (bullrush), that grows in water less than 5′ anywhere on Lake Couchiching. Good areas to fish for pike are around Atherley Narrows on the north-east side from Concession Rd.12 north up to Fern Resort Rd. You can fish 1/4 oz spinnerbaits inbetween the reeds, or fish a 1/4 oz. jighead with a 3″ twister-tail grub. A good open-water area to catch bass is off the south-west tip of Chief’s Island. You will see that the weedbeds there look dark with light patches (sand bottom). You can cast shallow running crankbaits there or fish the 1/4 oz jig/twister-tail grub.
A good area to fish for perch is on the south side of Heron Island between the channel marker and the island in water anywhere from 20-5′ depth. Live minnows fished on a hook/split-shot sinker or a pickerel rig works well as well as fishing a 1/8 oz. jighead with a 1-3″ plastic grub along the bottom.
