Posted on March 27th, 2015Hi Tristan…Picking a portable outboard motor comes down to personal brand preferance and finding the key features that will help you in enjoying each boating outing. For example, is weight of the outboard a concern? Are you planning on keeping the boat and motor seperate or are you planning on locking the motor on and keeping the boat docked at a cottage? Are you planning on trolling most of the time, or moving from spot to spots and casting? If you are planning on trolling, you may want ot look at a portable 4-stroke outboard since they are much more fuel efficient at trolling speed than a 2-stroke (about 80% more fuel efficient). From my travels throughout the world, the most popular outboard is a Yamaha. We just finished filming in the India Greater Hymalaya’s and again the most popular portable outboard there was Yamaha. I would suggest you compare prices, warrenty and other spec’s that are important to you before you purchase an outboard. By the way, in case you did not know, before Yamaha started selling outboards under the Yamaha name they made most of the outboards for Mercury and Johnson & Evinrude. They have many decades of making outboard motors, and especially experience making 4-stroke engines (both motorcycles and outboards)…God bless you, Italo
