Hi Italo, I received a 11.3 casting rod as a gift for river fishing salmon/trout. I match it with a smaller round reel bait caster that could handle 12pound test. Would you recommend braided line with a leader of mono or just straight mono.

Hi Daniel, sounds like a great steelhead/migratory trout/salmon tributary outfit.  Since steelhead, migratory browns and salmon fight hard, roll in the line and often jump out of the water it’s best to have a line that stretches and has “give”. I would encourage you to use a neutral or floating monofilament like the Sufix Seige. Eight pound test is ideal for Steelhead/migratory browns. Twelve pound test would be best for salmon…God bless you.
