Hi I live in Oshawa Ontario and I would like to know where I can fish smelts in the spring. Where is the closest place I can go fish them.
Posted on February 25th, 2010Hi Vital….Years ago we always used to fish for smelts off the Oshawa Pier. I have not been down there for many year so I don’t know if they still do well there. In the last 10 yrs., there has been a big decline in the Lake Ontario smelt population and most fishers I speak to who do smelt fish struggle to get enough fish for eating. Unfortunately the days are gone where you could catch a bushel-full of smelts in a couple of hours. You may want to contact Gagnon Sports and talk to some of the guys there that have gone out the last few years. I am sure they will share their information with you….God bless you, Italo
