Hey ItalyI am staying up at friends cottage on canal lake this past week and this coming one. I was wondering if this is a good lake for fishing or if I am better off going to another, not really asking for a new spot, more for your take on canal lake. Was out 4 times last week in my small boat, managed 2 bass on a top water frog in the pads and 1 bass and 1 pike on the south part on the point on a rapala crank bait, but over all the lake was extremely slow and catches were few and far between compared to my usual Ontario spots. I tried most areas in the lake on both sides of the bridge and in the canal, both deep and shallow. Is the lake just too small and over fished or have I likely not honed in on the correct technique there? Thanks Italo

Hi Steven, Canal Lake can produce some good bass, pike and panfish. Most people fish the shallower water and stumps and can waste a lot of time trying to find a fish here or there. I would encourage you to try jigging the weeds where they meet the open-water with a 3″ paddle-tail grub/ 1/4 oz jighead. Try and fish as close to the weeds as possible. You can also try twitching a Rapala Husky Jerk in the same areas…God bless you.
