Hi Ken…For the smallmouth the popular way of catching them there is to use a 1/8 or 1/4 oz. jig tipped with either a minnow, worm or leech.  I have done well fishing 4″ tubes and 3″ twister-tail grubs.  Regarding smallmouth bass around St Catharine’s, if you have a smart-phone like an iPhone, Android or Windows7, you can download our free, www.ufindfish.com , app.  I have marked over 1,000 of my favorite spots on this app, and many of them are shore-fishing areas around St. Catharine’s on various sections of the previous 5-Welland Canals (the 6th one is being used now).  The Niagara River at the Whirlpool and also in Fort Erie, ON are excellent spots to fish smallmouth bass from shore fishing with 4″ tubes, 1/4 & 3/8 oz. tube jigheads.  At the Whirlpool there is a lot of algae flowing down the river that catches on your line/jig, but if you are willing to clean it off reguarly, you can catch lot’s of trophy smallmouth up to 5 lb.  In fort Erie, fish the shoreline right in front of Southsides Roadhouse restaurant.  There is a nice beach shoreline there and you can wade out a little and fish the edge very effectively.  The smallmouth hold there right on the current break in 10-15′ of water….God bless you, ttalo
