Ice in southern Ontario is still maintaining itself on many smaller lakes north of Toronto. Evening temps that are below zero are helping to keep shoreline ice frozen and main ice still safe. Good example is some of the Kawartha Lakes where anglers re taking advantage of “pre-ice out” conditions and intercepting chunky panfish that are venturing into shallow water.
How shallow can you catch Crappie? Our good friend Ed Dolstra is catching them in 3′ water fishing small live minnows. His best success has been in the late afternoon and early evening.
As our lakes start to thaw and we have more open water, it will be time to get the boats in and fish along the shorelines and around docks for these same panfish.
