NY April Smallmouth action.
Posted on April 27th, 2016I really appreciate being able to fish “border-waters” line in Lake Ontario, the Niagara River and Lake Erie. As many of you know, you can catch & release bass in NY waters all year long!
It’s nice to be able to go our on a nice April day and enjoy some deep-water, pre-spawn smallmouth bass. My friend Bill Henry and I did some deep-water jigging with plastic minnows and had excellent results.
Most of the fish we caught were in the 17-20’+ range. Even though the water temps are in the low 40’sF, the smallies still head right to the surface even in 30′ of water and jump at least once!
Pre-spawn fish still feed heavily and are eager to strike a minnow imitating lure. For now jigging deep will work well. I love to catch these trophy fish using the Rapala ConceptTi spinning outfit with Sufix832 line…you can feel everything and really enjoy every fish fight! As waters warm up and they move shallower slash-baits and crankbaits will work well!
