While most of us are targetting summer, southern Ontario smallmouth, many anglers are travelling north and taking advantage of trophy bass fishing even farther north of Thunder Bay, ON.
On a recent trip Joe Kubassek met his son and fished a lake a short driving distance from Thunder Bay, ON, where they caught several limits of walleye and some really nice smallmouth bass.
In northern Ontario the bass fishing is open-all year but few anglers target them. They are usually caught incidentally while anglers target walleye.
Northern smallmouth won’t hesitate taking a jig/minnow or jig/worm presentation meant for walleye and in many cases, they will be the first to strike. As summer progresses look for some excellent top-water smallmouth bass action, especially in northern lakes.
