Niagara River Steelhead Update.
Posted on May 25th, 2009
As water temperatures are warming-up, anglers are catching a mixed bag of migratory rainbow trout, smallmouth bass and sheepshead.
Guides fishing the Lower Niagara out of Queenston, ON are averaging 4-10 steelhead an outing and a half-dozen warm-water fish (smallmouth bas & sheepshead). Luhr Jensen Kwikfish in the #5 & #7 size and silver/accent colors have been producing well, as well as small spawn sacks fished near the bottom. There are lot’s of baitfish throughout the Upper & Lower Niagara and it looks like the mixed-species fishing should be good right through May.
I fished below the Falls and experienced similar results. The water levels have been high, even at 7am in the morning and the best action was definitely before 10am.
