Niagara River Steelhead.
Posted on December 8th, 2021Most Steelhead anglers in southern Ontario recognize that the Niagara River, ON is one of the best places to catch Steelhead, Brown Trout and Lake Trout during the cold-weather months.

Our friends the Grdosic family were out recently and can confirm the fishing has been good.

Most anglers targeting fall Steelhead drift 3-way rigs with a 3′ lead and either use a roe bag, single imitation salmon egg, a 4″ long plastic minnow (like the Fishing Compete Italo’s Minnow), or a 4″ streamer fly drifting them just off the bottom.
Some of the best locations to locate all three species in water depth of 20-30′ where the main current meets the shoreline structure and produces a slower drift. Some of the best drifts have a “sticky-bottom” and it’s common to get hooked-up and even break-off many times during each fishing session. It’s a good idea to bring lots of terminal tackle to re-tie and also watch for cluster of boats that are hooking fish.
Make sure to check the fishing videos on our Italo Labignan YouTube channel and if you have any questions just email them to me at Ask Italo throughout our www.canadian-sportfishing.com website.
