May Chrome Steelhead.

Posted on May 7th, 2020

By May, most of our southern Ontario tributary steelhead are post-spawn with males having tight bellies and both male and female steelhead still showing their bright spawning colors.

In northern Ontario on the tributaries that flow into Lake Superior, Steelhead runs are later and anglers are still intercepting fresh-run fish.

Simeon Kubassek who fishes Lake Superior north-shore tributaries has been catching beautiful “chromers”, but is is confirming that fish are moving through fast when water levels are high and then as soon as water levels drop, few fish can be found. I know from my own experiences fishing the Wolf and Black Sturgeon Rivers off of the Trans-Canada highway, steelhead will be in right up to the end of May!
