Lower Niagara River, ON & NY, water condition & fishing update.

Posted on November 4th, 2013

Lower Niagara River king salmon caught at Whirlpool State Park on a 3/4 oz. silver/blue spoon.

Due to high winds on Lake Erie, the lower river is currently very muddy. Unfortunately, it may take a few days for conditions to improve. The king salmon run is all but over. Anglers now mainly see catches of steelhead and lake trout. Very few brown trout have shown in the lower river thus far. Boaters were catching decent numbers of steelhead and lake trout in the Artpark drift on egg sacs and golden shiners. Shore anglers can target trout from Whirlpool, Devils Hole and Artpark State Parks. Egg sacs and egg pattern flies fished under a float or casting medium-sized spoons and spinners are good bets for shore anglers. Keep in mind that lake trout season is closed until January 1st, so all caught lake trout must be quickly released. Catches of smallmouth bass have been good on shiners in the lower drifts and near the mouth of the river. Anglers are also catching decent numbers of yellow perch on minnows near the Lewiston, NY & Queenston, ON Sand Docks.
