Lower Niagara River, NY fishing update.

Posted on February 6th, 2017

Water conditions are looking good for the weekend, and floating ice is no longer an issue. Charter boats have seen good trout action in the mid to upper drifts and out on the Niagara Bar. In the gorge, drifters are catching steelhead and lake trout on three-way rigs with egg sacs or Kwikfish lures.

On the Niagara Bar, catches have been mostly lake trout with some brown trout and steelhead mixed in. Shore anglers can target trout along Artpark, Devils Hole and Whirlpool State Parks. Egg sacs, egg pattern flies, shiners and jigs with plastics fished under a float, or casting medium-sized spoons and Vibrax spinners are good trout offerings. The New York Power Authority fishing platform closed for the winter season on December 8th

Regulation notes: Lake trout season is open on the lower river as of January 1st. Also starting on January 1st, walleye daily limit decreased to 1, with minimum length of 18 inches. For more information check out, http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor
