Lower Niagara River Fishing Update, NY.

Posted on November 23rd, 2013

This trophy brown was caught on the NY side of the Whirlpool. Take advantage of the excellent migratory trout action this Nov. & Dec. on both the NY and Ontario side of the Niagara Whirlpool.

Windy weather has again muddied river waters and anglers should expect marginal conditions through the weekend. Turbid water conditions generally put the boat fishing on hold until clarity improves. Previously, boaters saw some good steelhead action in the Devils Hole and Artpark drifts. Drifting with a three-way bottom bouncing rig with a shiner, egg sac or Luhr Jensen Kwikfish lure is the standard approach for trout. Look for the shoreline bite to pick up first, as trout seek out the slightly clearer, slower moving areas near shore. Shore anglers were catching decent numbers of steelhead with plenty of incidental lake trout and the occasional brown trout mixed in. Keep in mind that lake trout season is closed until January 1st, so all caught lake trout should be quickly released. Shore anglers can target trout at Whirlpool, Devils Hole and Artpark State Parks. Fishing egg sacs, egg pattern flies and minnows under a float or casting medium-sized spoons and spinners are good bets for shore anglers.
