Little lures, big panfish.
Posted on June 12th, 2018Spring is a great time to change-up the fishing from catching trophy gamefish like steelhead, walleye, pike and even spring salmon to target some pretty “big-little-fish”.
Yes, I’m talking about the sunfish family of panfish which includes the pumpkinseed and bluegill.
I recently had a chance to fish Lake St. Clair and produce a panfish TV show catching both species using the 3″ Lunker City Helgie on a 1/16 oz. jighead. I fished it in 3-5′ of water suspending the Helgie with an African porcupine quill float. The 1/16 oz. jighead was just he right weight to keep 1/3 of the quill above the water line.
I also fished the MFSBaits 1/32 oz Coach Dog by simply casting it and letting it sink slowly and they gently jigging it back to me. The area I was fishing has light weed grown and both presentations produced nice panfish but I had to keep changing from the Helgie to the Coach Dog to keep them interested.
