Gindian Dupuis send us these impressive Burbot (freshwater ling), nightime catches he and his friends enjoyed this past week.
While most of us think of Burbot being caught through the ice when we’re targeting Lakes and Whitefish, especially at night, they can be caught in open-water especially in the spring and fall when water temperatures are colder.
Burbot are bottom feeders and love to feed on smaller fish. They are usually incidentally caught by anglers using live minnows (where allowed), but they can also be easily caught on a chunk of dead-bait fished right on the bottom. Some people don’t like their looks or their shape. I personally admire them as an excellent fish to catch and especially to eat!!
