Passionate ice fishermen that love to target jumbo perch know that the later you can fish them through the ice, the bigger the perch get prior to spawning.
Ed Dolstra is continuing to catch jumbo perch in the Kawartha Lakes fishing in shallow water using live minnows. On many of our lakes we do still have 8-12″ of solid ice, but with mild temperatures forecast for the new few weeks, the ice thickness will start shrinking. The largest of his two perch above measured-out at 13-inches and weighed 1.2 pounds!
We are warning ice-anglers to use extreme CAUTION accessing the ice form shore (the ice usually melts faster along the shorelines), as it’s easy to break-trough trying to get onto the main ice. Also, don’t take existing ice thicknesses for granted. To be safe make test holes to confirm safety as you head out further.
