If you live in Ontario’s far north, you know that waters are still iced-up, but most rivers are open, especially those larger ones that flow into Lake Superior. Our good friends Joe and Simeon Kubassek have been enjoying great steelhead fishing right through May with very little competition. Our feature image shows Joe holding up a prime steelhead they caught in one of the smaller tributaries, just before release.
You can see in the image above that the larger tributaries have lots of run-off water which is making for ideal steelheading.
Faster flows require beefing-up drift rigs and drifting slower areas just our of the main current. Best presentation to use on these fresh-run fish is definitely a fresh spawn bag fished with a good float-rig setup.
