Lake Simcoe Whitfish Update.

Posted on February 12th, 2011

[singlepic id=1695 w=320 h=240 float=]The cold front that moved through southern Ontario over the last two days really put a damper on the deep-water fishing for whitefish and lake trout in Lake Simcoe.  I joined a group of 10 anglers that were fishing out of Bonnie Boats Ice Hut Rentals on Thurs., and fished again yesterday out of Willow Beach, ON in water depths of 60-90′, and I can tell you that the whitefish were shut-down.  On Thurs., our friend Bill who traveled all the way from BC to fish for Lake Simcoe whitefish caught the only two fish out of our group.  He caught both of them jigging the new Rapala Lil’Finn (pg.82), spoon about 10′ off the bottom.  Yesterday I fished with my friends Chip, Dave, Rocky and James and only James and I hooked a whitfish.  James lost his at the hole and I landed mine….that’s tough fishing.  The average air temperature on both days was -19C with strong winds which made it feel like -25C.  Fishing out on the open ice was intolerable!!  We landed all of our fish using the new Rapala R-Type (pgs. 86/69),  spinning and baitcasting ice combos.  With the mild weather moving in for all of next week look for whitefish to become very active.
