Lake Ontario tributary steelhead action, Upper NY.

Posted on April 16th, 2014

italo_steelhead02It’s nice to be back out fishing drift outfits for spring steelhead in comfortable weather.  I was out checking the Lake Ontario, Upper NY tributaries and hoooked a couple of nice steelhead on light line including this trophy female that was full of eggs and ready to spawn.  Even with colder than normal tributary temperatures steelhead are in and spawning!

I was again using one of my favorite outfits, the Rapala R-Type 11 1/2? Drift Rod with the Rapala Set-back Center Pin reel and loaded with Sufix Tritaniumyellow line, a Sufix Fluorocarbon Leader and a #10 Gamagatsu Octopus hook.  I drifted the TriggerX single salmon egg in the natural color.  As tributary waters drop, the fishing in the “all year” open stretches should continue to be good through next week.
