Lake Ontario Salmon Action aboard Mitchell’s Sportfishing Charter!

Last evening I had the pleasure of hooking up with Joe Viecili from Foxx Advertising & Design Inc., for some Lake Ontario, Salmon fishing. Our hosts for the evening were Matt Mitchell, from Mitchell’s Sportfishing Charters and Matt’s good friend Michael McNaught. We received a call around noon yesterday from Matt advising that due to the weather conditions we would need to cancel our planned trip. However to our surprise we had another call later in the afternoon from Michael suggesting that the storm had gone through the Newcastle area and that we might have a window of opportunity to get out on the lake so the decision was made that we would venture down to the lake as fast as possible to try our luck. We met up with Matt and Michael at approximately 5:00 PM and we were soon on our way out to the lake. It was only a short time later we started to catch some fish. Matt and Michael had done some pre-fishing the night before and had hooked up with several good fish ( that they had marked on their GPS ). We started trolling in this same area last night approximately 3 miles out from the marina. Matt and Michael figured out that the fish had moved slightly off the productive area from the night before and over the course of the next couple of hours we managed to boat several Chinook Salmon (with another few that managed to get off).
The highlight of the evening was the Chinook Salmon caught by Joe, that we estimated weighed over 20 lbs. – this was a thrill for all of us on board as the fish put up a tremendous fight. Once landed we all offered Joe our congratulations as this was his heaviest Salmon he had ever caught on Lake Ontario.
I was very impressed with the guy’s fishing knowledge, positive attitudes and determination to ensure that we landed fish on our relatively short outing. Our two hosts worked as an effective team and allowed Joe and I to alternate on the rod that happened to be “going off at the time”. On one occasion we had a double header which was very cool!
