We just received word from Daniel James McNeill who was out fishing with his son that the Lake Trout fishing has been excellent this early spring in the eastern-basin of Lake Ontario.
They have been trolling the eastern basin out of Kingston and using a combination of downriggers, dipsy divers, and lead core lines with planer boards. 7 colours of lead core line was the ticket.
They ran mostly spoons but also ran some salmon flies from “Port Hopper flies” with 8 inch spin doctors.
In the morning they concentrated on shallower 30-50 feet with our baits all over the water column. Anywhere from 20 feet to a few feet off bottom.
From 10am-12pm they went out deeper to 50-80 feet of water. Most of the bigger fish came on downriggers set 8-10’ off bottom and they were hitting everything. trolling speed was 2 miles an hour.
They were all spitting up gobies like crazy. The Lakers have definitely learned that Goby’s are easy meals and nutritious!
