Lake Erie Sucker Run
Posted on April 20th, 2009Tyler & Jason Howick report: The last few weeks have seen heavy runs of white and redhorse suckers in Lake Erie tributaries. We have been using ultra light gear with thin diameter braided lines fishing live bait rigs on bottom with simple slit shot setups and slip-sinker rigs. Large numbers of fish hold and rest in deeper pools and multiple fish can be caught out of one spot. The past week has seen many suckers switch to spawning mode and move up onto shallow gravel flats, becoming very difficult to catch and often refusing baits. The most consistent fishing for numbers and big fish is definitely during the early pre-spawn part of their run.
