Lake Erie, ON walleye & rainbow trout fishing update.

Posted on July 14th, 2014

joe_walleyeOur good friend Joe Kubassek was out on Lake Erie out of Port Burwell, ON and reports that the fishing was slow, but they still managed to catch some nice walleye and two nice rainbow trout.

eire_walleye02They were trolling in 60′ of water using a variety of fluttering spoons and Rapala crankbaits and fishing their lures anywhere from 30-60′ deep.

erie_rainbowAs many Lake Erie anglers know, the centre part of Lake Erie heading west towards Port Burwell is one of the best areas to catch both walleye and rainbows trout, while the eastern and western basin is more suited for walleye in open water.

erie_rainbow02Trolling speed can be crucial for walleye and most anglers will troll from 1-2 mph.  Downriggers and diving devices such as the Luhr Jensen Jet Diver, Luhr Jensen Pink Lady, Luhr Jensen Dipsey Diver, & Luhr Jensen Deep Six all work well if you plan on “flat-line” trolling and getting your lure down to the right depth.  All of the diving devices can be used with or without planer boards.

Traditionally all of July & August is an excellent time to target both species in Lake Erie….water-conditions permitting, of course!
