Lake Erie, ON Tributary Channel Catfish Report.

[nggallery id=493]Tyler & Jason Howick report; “Hello Italo, Hope things have been well with you and the fishing has been great.  We noticed that some larger channel cats were being caught on the Grand Rivier recently, 20-25 lbs!!!!  The leading spot in the Dunnville, ON catfish derby is 25.05 lbs!!!!   We decided to try the fishing but the weather was awful, lots of snow showers and colder water temps.  We did catch a lot of fish in the 10-15 lbs range but not that 20 + lb. we were looking for!!!!!!   Once again we were faced with cold front conditions and cooler water temperatures in the 43 F range. The fish were very sluggish in the colder water, biting much lighter than normal and dropping baits after a brief hit. We anchored in 2-3 ft of water near shore and cast our rigs into 8-12 feet. We used 30-50lb braid, slip sinker rigs with 2-3 oz sinkers, and 4-5/0 octopus hooks baited with fresh cut-bait. The first two fish we caught were 10 and 11 lbs and we missed 3 other finicky cats. After moving several times and enduring heavy snow showers, we anchored closer to the dam, stayed in one spot for an hour and a half and caught 12 channel cats. Biggest fish of the day was 15.5 lbs and many were in the 10-14 lb range.

Take care and good fishing.

Tyler and Jason Howick
