Perch fishermen will be happy to hear that on “fishable-days” (winds not too strong and waves not too high), the jumbo perch fishing has been excellent on Lake Erie from Point Abino, ON, all they way to Port Dover, ON.
Tyler & Jason Howick report. We Fished the North Shore of Lake Erie today for it’s famous jumbo yellow perch. We anchored in 26-28′ of water where we fished “pickerel rigs” using ultra light action 5-foot rods rigged with 8-10 lb test braided line (2-4 lb. test monofilament diameter). For bait we used shiner minnows fished on the bottom with a 1/2 to 3/4 ounce bell sinkers…this effectively held our live bait presentations in one place. We caught a lot of the jumbo perch measuring 12-13.5 “. Quite a few of the large perch were spitting up smelt and small gobies after being netted and unhooked. In addition to the jumbo perch, we also landed many large sheepshead and a few white bass. We ended up keeping 49 jumbo perch up to 13.5 inches and many fish in between 11-13 inches. In addition we released 25-30 smaller sized perchas well, and with no wind or waves and a lot of warm sunshine, it was an incredible day to be on the water!!!”
